On May 23, 2017 in Marawi Lanao Del Sur, the historical Marawi Siege happened. The armed forces of the government clashed with two ISIL-affiliated groups; Abu Sayyaf and Maute. The siege was triggered when the military tried to arrest the top ISIL (Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant group) leader, Isnilon Hapilon.
The attackers tried to fight back, declaring the city a new caliphate of ISIL or also known as ISIS. They burned a Catholic Church, city jail and two schools before occupying the main roads and major bridges of the city. They captured Church goers ang residents as their hostages.
It lasted for 5 months dating from 23rd of May to 23rd of October. It was ended after the acting leader of the group, Omar Maute was killed by a sniper outside their hide out. The casualties resulted to many deaths of civilian, fighters and soldiers and leaving the Marawi as a ghost town because of the total devastation of the whole city.
